Graham Chiu - EMR Specialist turned Digital Marketer

I am Graham Chiu, an entrepreneur, hobbyist and prolific social media participant, who depends on digital marketing not just as a source of income but also for reaching out and interacting with people all over the world.

Was I always an active social butterfly that enjoyed connecting with people every day? In what seems like a previous life today, I was an employee in the healthcare sector wherein I kept electronic medical records of patients visiting our facility. Popularly known as an EMR specialist, my job description ranged from data conversion and product development to implementation of the information gathered. Although such a job does require an individual to be IT savvy, it does not offer much beyond the limited scope of work.

So like everyone else I was content with my job, oblivious of its shortcomings and followed the same monotonous routine every day….till one day when lightning struck and left me completely astounded. It was the morning of 31st January, 2009, when everyone from our division was summoned by our supervisor and thinking that we would be appreciated for our hard work, we all filled into his office with plenty of anticipation. We could not have been more wrong.

Within a few minutes, our world came crumbling down as if it were nothing more than a castle of cards. We were tersely informed that in order to cope up with the current economic climate – which by the way was really rough those days – the facility had decided to lay off some of its staff and our group was a part of this measure.

Numbed was what I felt after this announcement – too numbed to speak out or react or even to reach out to my co-workers. My mind was in turmoil and I went through the formalities like a robot and soon found myself standing outside, wondering where to go and unsure what to do next. Like many others in my situation, I did try looking for a job over the days that followed but as luck would have it, economic recession had cast its ugly cloud all around and jobs were few and far between.

It was during one of my quieter moments when I was going through online applications that I came across the concept of digital marketing. And I said to myself – why not? Soon I was exploring the subject and surprisingly found it a lot more interesting, not to mention lucrative. All it required was an open mind and out-of-the-box thinking and since I had both on my side, there was no hesitation in taking the first step.

From that day onward, I have never looked back on my old life again. Digital marketing taught me how to transcend geographical boundaries and connect with people on a global scale, something that I began to enjoy after I had got over my initial hesitation. Soon money began to trickle in and as days, weeks and months flew by, the trickle widened into a stream and then a rivulet of substantial proportions.

True though it is that I took to digital marketing in a fit of desperation, today I am thankful for having made an attempt. This field has given me more than what I had bargained for and I would recommend it anyone who has been through the same trying circumstances like me. Today not only am I able to fend for myself but also have plenty of time to spare wherein I can pursue my hobbies and spend quality time with my family.

So what are you waiting for?

6 Ways to Break-up with Google

To avid online entrepreneurs, Google is known for constantly updating and tweaking its search algorithms in order to generate the most relevant results for your search queries, for the most part at least. While some websites are immune to these updates, many end up losing a major chunk of their traffic as also their rankings. It is very difficult to predict how these updates will affect your website’s rank in the search results. Clearly, relying only on SEO to drive traffic to your website is a risky move.

5 Ways to Ensure Your Content Goes Viral

Generating viral content is difficult enough and what is even more difficult is to ensure that does assume viral proportions on the Internet. Unfortunately there are no mantras or any fixed set of rules that you must follow to make sure that your posts go viral. There is definitely a significant element of luck involved which is hardly surprising given the inherently unpredictable nature of the Internet. For a post to go viral, a user after reading through a post, must somehow feel compelled to share the post with his circle of friends either through social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or through email. Obviously this is no easy task.
