    Additional software

I'm installing Synapse locally so I thought I would this start a thread to create a list of optional software used with Synapse.

Here's what I have so far:

    1. FIBS - Firebird Database backup Freeware

    2. FireDaemon Pro - Run Synapse Server app as a Windows Service. $35 for 1 license.

Any suggestions for document scanning and voice dictation software?

Please feel free to add to the list.

    Re: Additional software

We may support http://www.nch.com.au/express/index.html at some stage.

We do have the facility to do scanning .... but don't have the time to build the scanning interface yet.

    Re: Additional software

PaperPort 9 - scanning (purchase on ebay) - pretty cheap.

Hamachi - VPN from home - free

LogmeIN - PC access to server from home - free

I use PaperPort 11 with Omnipage 15 to allow fully OCR'd documents.  I am hoping to migrate to Omnipage alone or maybe Adobe Acrobat 7.

    Re: Additional software

We have an application license for Dosadi's http://www.dosadi.com/ scanning modules.  This includes a 3of9 barcode OCR recognition engine.

If someone wants to design the workflow for this, I might be able to add to Synapse EMR.

I just read this again.  I'll have to sleep on it.  I have 40+ to see tomorrow.  Lord, I might not make it.

    Re: Additional software

There seems to be some DNS interest in this community so I thought I’d drop of this information as doctors  are leading in regards to their usage of speech recognition.

    1. If you’re using Vista it’s best to have 3-4 GB of RAM. For an XP platform you will require 1 GB of RAM although 2 would be preferred. The software will run on less but won’t be as effective.

    NOTE:
If you're looking at buying a new computer to use with DNS I would consider looking at ASUS computers. Regardless of what system you by, you want a Core2 Duo 2 GHz or better CPU speed, 2 GB of RAM an XP platform (3 GB on Vista), 2 - 4 MB of L2 cache, a SATA hard drive of at least 100 GB although you may be able get 160 for about the same price. Your soundcard will be important so go with a mid to high end Soundblaster.

    2. If you are not using a Soundblaster card(or other high end after market soundcard) don’t depend on the integrated soundcard in your computer as it is probably poorly shielded. Get yourself an external soundcard (USB Pod) and use a USB port on the back of your computer as opposed to the front.

    3. Here is a copy of the manual we wrote for version 9. It’s designed as version 9.5 upgrade manual but if you are a new user to DNS you can download a full copy manual at KnowBrainer.com.  KnowBrainer Manual http://www.knowbrainer.com/downloads/KnowBrainer_Manual.PDF  http://www.knowbrainer.com/downloads/KnowBrainer_Manual.PDF

    4. Here is a copy of the KnowBrainer Quick Tips which is PDF help file for day to day troubleshooting that is updated all the time from questions answered on our forum.  http://www.knowbrainer.com/downloads/NatPro_Quick_Tips.pdf  http://www.knowbrainer.com/downloads/NatPro_Quick_Tips.pdf

    5. Here is a copy of our DNS 9 Review. I think you’ll find it pretty thorough. http://www.knowbrainer.com/downloads/v9_review.pdf   http://www.knowbrainer.com/downloads/v9_review.pdf

    6. For research feel free to use the KnowBrainer Speech Recognition Forum as it is by far the largest and most active of its kind.  http://www.knowbrainer.com/PubForum/   http://www.knowbrainer.com/PubForum/

    7.
I know there are quite a few users of NaturallySpeaking version 9 who don’t know about the Free upgrade to 9.5.  Then there are some that do but don’t have time to find a path to it and worry about difficulty installing it.  You should always use the most updated software especially when it’s free.  Version 9.5 consolidates the code between version 9 and 9.1 and contains a few minor tweaks.  The main purpose for the upgrade is for Vista compatibility.  Here is your path and instructions - DNS 9.5 Update Guide  http://www.knowbrainer.com/downloads/DNS_9.5_Update.pdf

Re: Additional software - Sinática Monitor

Sinática Monitor (Beta) for Firebird now. It's free!

    - works with Firebird 2.1 or higher.

    http://www.sinatica.com/blog/en/index.php/2008/10/sinatica-monitor-is-here

    Features and Benefits

    Real-time database monitoring

Monitor your database in real-time and find out what is happening with your Firebird server.
Observing your server's activity patterns, you can take actions to stop problems before they strike.

Identify bottlenecks in your server's disk subsystem.
Sinática Monitor has an I/O Activity Chart that distinguishes Read, Write, and Cache activities. This allows you to monitor (from anywhere anywhere and at anytime), if it is the disk subsystem that is preventing your database from functioning at peak performance.

Verify if your application's transaction management is working properly.
Using the Transaction Activity Chart you can avoid a stuck transaction from hampering your Firebird server's performance.

Optimize your development. Use the Greatest I/O Consumers Chart to find out which user, process, or client consumes the most server I/O resources.
This allows you to focus your development resources on optimizing database areas that are actually going to improve performance.

    Customizable Alarms

Sinática Monitor for Firebird constantly analyzes your database and warns you about problems. You only stop your other activities to monitor the database if you wish. Let Sinática Monitor do the hard work and alert you if something atypical happens.
With a smart and highly customizable alarm system, you will find:

Statements with large amounts of non-indexed reads.

As one of the greatest villains of I/O performance, these statements are completely identified by Sinática Monitor. You can optimize your database where it needs it the most.

    Stuck transactions.
When and if this happens, you are warned with a report that fully identifies the transaction. You can then take action before such transactions start affecting other database users.

    Slow Statements.
Sinática Monitor for Firebird detects and identifies slow statements using alarms. You no longer need to guess which statement is consuming server resources.

Re: Additional software - Sinática Monitor

Looks interesting .. but the free only applies to the beta test period.  I presume that it stops working after that and then you pay.
